We are currently working on the construction of a new penthouse near Liverpool Street. The new apartment sits on top of an existing four storey building giving dramatic views of the city skyline.

Terraces to the perimeter of the building are to be heavily landscaped creating a beautiful natural environment around the structure. The building will be clad in stone cut rainscreen with full height aluminium windows. A central courtyard and rooflights allow natural light to flood into the centre of the building.

We are currently working on tender and production information drawings and construction is due to commence in March 2012.

The proposed roof extension will form part of the varied landscape of roof top architecture in Hoxton square.

The extension is designed a homogeneous structural shell with openings punched into it. The shell has been shaped in order to respond to its surroundings and its use. Edges are cut back to reduce sight-lines from street level, roof lights have been incorporated to produce lighting that is suitable for office use and in order to produce interesting and beautiful working volumes within.

The form of the extension is determined by its use, by its location, by the shape of the existing host building and by a desire to create a subtle and careful addition to the Hoxton Square roof line.

Sculpted Rooftop Pods

We are currently working on the extension of our own Architectural Studio in Curtain Road by creating pod like structures on the existing flat roof. The sculptural forms are designed to fit within the cultural background of the progressive arts movement in Shoreditch.

Inspired by the 2010 V&A series of installations ‘Architects Build Small Spaces’ we have designed 3 primary pods with simple monopitch roof forms. The new spaces are set on a north south axis providing framed views of the stunning city skyline. Careful consideration has been given to the spread of natural daylight within the pods, an important feature of a creative environment.

Hardwood cladding and high quality sliding metal doors will create a good quality working environment. Outside terraces are retained to the perimeter of the new structures providing external rooms.

Planning has been granted and we are currently preparing construction details. We are looking at a number of offsite fabrication systems that will increase quality and reduce construction time.

This scheme creates a new Sailing Clubhouse, which will be a focal point and an identity. The building will encourage the enjoyment of sailing and will be both welcoming and outward looking.

The building is designed to accommodate the range of key activities required by the club. It is also designed to accommodate social interaction, which can take place in a series of flexible spaces located inside and outside the building. Social interaction is a primary activity for the club.

The ground floor is built as a monolithic, sculpted block. It will be clad in local natural stone, perhaps walling stone from Honister slate mine. These walls would be a showpiece for local stonemasons and wall builders.

The first floor is set above a 1:100 year flood datum of 149.00m and this is therefore where finishes can be softer and more welcoming and where finishes specifications can be higher. The first floor is built off the ground floor on a simple steel frame with a pre-cast concrete floor.

Materials and structure are chosen for their simplicity and robustness.

The ground floor is designed so that flooding can occur without significant water damage. Watertight storerooms containing equipment and plant are located within deep, protected wall zones.

The ground floor and first floor are architecturally separated with a band of clerestory glazing, which allows daylight to spread across the ground floor. At night, light from the ground floor will spill out from this glazing to give the impression that the first floor is suspended, as if by magic.

The design of this landmark is the submission prepared by the practice for the Architecture Foundation Organised Algate 2012 Architectural Competition.

This proposal reinforces and exposes the culture of the City and High Street 2012 through the production of a book, the book is celebrated through the installation of a temporary landmark at Aldgate.

We have taken as our starting point the fact that Geoffrey Chaucer, author of The Canterbury Tales, lived above the original Aldgate. The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories describing pilgrims of different backgrounds. Chapter headings include The Knight, The Squire, The Friar, The Clerk etc. The Canterbury Tales also a fantastic representation of the society Chaucer lived in.

We are proposing to use The City of London and the High Street 2012 to produce a book about themselves and the society we live in. The book will take the same format as the Canterbury tales, but the characters will be people who live or work on High Street 2012 and, crucially have a connection with historical events that have taken place in the area.

The temporary landmark and the book will start life together; From the book we take a sheet of paper, roll it up to form the scroll and fill it with words and light to form The New Gate For All For 2012.
